#6 - Freedom and Fear

Hello beautiful souls, I took some time to myself since arriving to Washington to ground. This is the longest I’ve stayed put since staying with my brother in Florida nearly 2 months ago. I’ve been immersed in the beautiful and luscious Olympic National Forest, taking time to slow down and reflect on all that has rapidly changed within me and around me. Being alone on the road has forced me to confront some of my deepest fears. Fear for my own safety, fear of being alone, fears around money, fear of failure, of true expression, of being unworthy of my dreams. Constantly living out of my comfort zones has shown me all the tension I hold within me. Having the freedom to go anywhere has shown me all the ways I am still not free in my own body and mind. At first these realizations were daunting. I thought to myself, I have been doing so much inner work on myself the past almost 4 years now, will I ever be done? The answer is no, of course not. I have chosen to live a radically authentic life and that comes with constant opportunities to grow. And after all these fears are only showing up because I have the courage to face them. But I so often catch myself focusing solely on the end result of something, where will I be when I’m done traveling? Where will I live? In the pursuit of becoming the highest version of myself I so easily overlook all that I am now, all that I have already accomplished, and all that I have in this moment. The thing to remember is, as we are learning and growing to better ourselves that doesn’t make the previous version of you, of us, any less worthy. If you’re constantly searching for more, you miss out on all the magic that already surrounds you. Even in these moments of fear I know that I will one day I will look back at this time in my life and see nothing but magic. That within my uncertainty was also my potential and within my discomfort was also the opportunity to see what I needed to change. I am so grateful for these mossy trees for pulling me deeply back into the present moment, into gratitude and appreciation for all that is. For slowing me down and reminding me there is no rush, that all is unfolding exactly as it should. Returning me to a state of childlike wonder as I explore this dense temperate rain forest.

I want to close out with one of my favorite quotes by Henry David Thoreau. “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms...”

A special thank you to those of you who sent money through my support link and those who have bought prints. I am so grateful to share this journey with you all.

Much love,

Jara

#5 - Hidden Gem

Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. After over an hour up and down unpaved, steep mountain roads, it felt like we were headed nowhere. The sun was getting ready to set, turning around wasn’t much of an option now. We were headed to a seemingly hidden campsite write on the coast of Petrolia, California. While the drive was beautiful, we were too focused on the road that partially crumbled down the side of the mountain to pay much attention to the views. Suddenly the landscape opened up and the salty air came rushing in. The campsites were all full but we were taken in by an older traveler, Em, and spent the first night around the fire listening to the stories off his many adventures. The next morning we set out for a 6 mile hike on the beach along the Lost Coast Trail. We just so happened to be out there on one of the windiest days of the year. Outside of being pelted with sand it was magical. From the rocky cliffs, the secluded beach, the pack of elephant seals that came close to shore and the bear tracks on the beach. Much of what I’ll remember about this place is the journey there, the sunsets and the people. I took my favorite photo to date there, scroll down to see the portrait or Richard.

Em has lived on the road for years. Out of a backpack, off a motorcycle, in trailers and now in his current truck set up. He spends most of his time now making pipes out of driftwood he finds on the beach.

I hope you enjoyed a little taste of this place. I just updated my website a bit so take a look around. As always, I am so grateful for the support.

Much love,

Jara

#4 - Camelot

Camelot represents a society in perfect harmony, I’d say that describes this campground pretty damn well. After driving 17 hours to California to meet up with Jindi and Gemma, the community at Camelot was exactly what my soul needed. Micheal (Owner), his girlfriend Leslie, Mark and Kevin who also live on the property truly make you feel so welcome. I felt like I got a small taste of life on a commune between community dinners, live music courtesy of Micheal and truly authentic conversations over a cup of coffee with all the fellow campers. I was eager to learn more about this place. After hours chatting with Micheal about the history of this space and his future intentions for it, I learned that he has had this land for over 20 years, has gone through many different projects and had only been in business as a campground for 4 weeks at the time. He spent lots of time getting raw, honest feedback from all the campers to truly make this an inviting and open environment. He plans to invite more musicians to come and play on weekends and hopefully host a podcast right from the campsite. The overall hope for Camelot is to be a place where people can come together in community, despite any differences. Which is so desperately needed in our society and I hope to create my own version one day. Leaving Camelot felt like leaving home all over again. I feel so grateful to have seen it in its beginnings stages because I know it will take off and I will absolutely be back to see it.

This campsite can be found on HipCamp under The Hill Fort Camelot!

Writing like this is definitely challenging me in all the best ways, hope you all enjoy this post.

Much love,

Jara.

#3 - Surrender Your Expectations

So much has changed in the past two weeks since my last post. Shortly after that post, I was somewhere in the mountains of Colorado, 30 or so miles down a dirt road. When I realized that I didn’t want to do this alone. I felt as if I was swimming up stream when I could be floating down it. It was in that moment I decided I was going to drop any bits of a plan I had left and drive to Southern California to road trip with two women I had never met. None of it made sense to my mind. After all, I had all these preconceived ideas of how this trip would play out, but my soul kept calling me to go. So I listened, and for the past 2 weeks I have been traveling up the California coast with two fellow powerful women. I’ve been courageous and vulnerable all at the same time. To say the Universe conspired for Jindi, Gemma and I to meet would be an understatement. Jindi was visiting from the Netherlands, with no car, hoping to find someone to go on her dream California road trip with her. Gemma was in the middle of a month life through hike in Colorado when she dropped it all because she too felt the pull. And by the end of it we all had learned so much from each other to help us continue on our paths. I am so grateful for them, for showing me the depth of my own strength and creativity. I am so much more confident in my own abilities to continue living like this, just floating down stream. It has now been over a month since I left Maryland, and since then I have driven over 5,000 miles. Through life on the bayou in Louisiana, to endless cattle ranches in Texas, desolate towns in New Mexico, along the rocky mountains and the Colorado river, through the seemingly endless desert, rock formations and canyons, through Joshua trees, and southern California wine country. Up the pacific coast, over the golden gate bridge and through the redwoods. The landscape around me has rapidly changed and so have I along with it.

I am a changed person, I cannot fit back into the places I was before, nor do I want to, and I only have a slight idea of where I am headed. But if I have learned anything recently, it is to surrender all my expectations and trust that I will always end up exactly where I am supposed to be.

The dog days are over.

Side-note: I received so much support after my last entry, it was truly incredible. If you’re enjoying my photos and entries please share my website and my instagram! That alone helps tremendously. If you feel called to support further, consider buying a print from my print shop, which I will continue to update. I also added a support option where you can donate any amount to help keep me on the road and sharing my journey. Everything can be found on my drop down menu. I am so grateful for any and all support.

#2 - A New Chapter Begins

Things have been pretty slow moving since I left New Orleans on Monday and set out for Colorado. In all honesty, I was moving through some intense emotions as I began adjusting to living in my car, by myself, on the other side of the country. I am aware how much of an internal/spiritual journey this is as much as a physical one. The further west I drove, from all that was once familiar, the deeper my heart ached. Mourning a chapter of my life that was coming to a much anticipated close. In the moments of sheer doubt I have experienced the past few days, I couldn’t help but know from a higher awareness that life was trying to break me open not break me down. There is no more room to hide from my own potential. This is the type of growth that comes from leaving every single one of your comfort zones and plunging into the unknown. Because the truth is much of my life is uncertain now and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I don’t have some magnificent route planned out, I’m not quite sure where I’ll be tomorrow yet alone a month from now. But I do know that wherever I end up I’ll be there fully. Showing up in each coming moment as a more embodied version of my most authentic self. So, as I sit here writing this 10,000 feet up somewhere in Colorado, I know in my soul that this is where my new chapter beings.

On a lighter note, I have been brushing my teeth in a lot of weird places…can’t help but laugh at this weird life we’re all living.

Much love,

Jara.

One of the many, many ranches I passed while driving through Texas.

Spent the first few hours in Colorado in complete awe.

#1 - Introduction

A short entry to introduce this new section of my website before jumping right into the deep end. I have always been pretty passionate about writing but it often felt too vulnerable to share. Well, now is the perfect time to start, as I have just set out on a new journey of leaving all sorts of comfort zones. About a week ago I left my hometown to travel around the US in my car. I’ve dreamt of living on the road since I was a child, going wherever the wind blows me. I am just getting started and it all feels quite surreal. The amount of freedom I have to go wherever I want is frightening yet absolutely invigorating at the same time. I plan on posting entries whenever the inspiration hits, which lately is quite often. My intention is for this to be a spontaneous place to share my stories and thoughts as I would in my own journal. I am not sure where any of this will take me, but how exciting is that?

Much love,

Jara
